My name is Julia. I am a junior in high school and am very involved in Autism out reach because of my brother, Jack. My two younger brothers, Will and Jack, are twins and were very happy babies but during their toddler years, it became apparent Jack's rate of development was delayed. He began showing symptoms of Autism including isolating himself from others, rocking back and forth, perseverating in speech, as well as developing sensitivity to loud sounds and music. At the age of 3, Jack was diagnosed along the Autism Spectrum.
Consequent to his diagnosis, Jack received specialized treatment, including, speech therapy for language development and occupational therapy to assist with the development of motor skills. He also received desensitization therapy for his aversion to lights and sounds. He has made a lot of improvements. Unlike some children with Autism, he does not self-isolate as often as before. In fact, he enjoys spending time with others and has quite the social calendar! He participates in special needs sports clinics for basketball, baseball, and soccer and enjoys learning about photography. Unlike other children his age, he is very responsible for his own living environment including, cleaning and organizing his room, doing his own laundry, and even assists in other household chores like loading the dishwasher, setting the table, and he enjoys baking with my brother and me. My brother has seen great success with the therapy for his condition and is continuously improving. Life changes that impact children with Autism can be dramatic and children with Autism can lead dynamic and fulfilling lives. Please consider donating to help provide much needed assistance for children with Autism so they can reach their potential. |
